Survey and Identification of Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in Indiana

چکیده
In total, 289 termite samples were collected from 45 counties in Indiana during 2002Ð 2004. Approximately 89% of the collection sites were associated with artiÞcial structures, and almost half of the samples were from inside homes. The rest of the samples were from forested areas. Termite samples were identiÞed based on their morphological characteristics, molecular characteristics, or both. Five species from the genus Reticulitermes were identiÞed, and the relative abundance (percentage of the total collections) of these Þve species was Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) (90.0), Reticulitermes virginicus (Banks) (7.6), Reticulitermes arenincola (Goellner) (1.0), Reticulitermes tibialis (Banks) (1.0), andReticulitermes hageniBanks (0.3). Based on the distributionmap,R. flavipes was the dominant and the most widely distributed species in Indiana (44 counties); followed by R. virginicus (13 counties). The three otherReticulitermes species,R. arenincola,R. tibialis, andR. hageni, were encountered in only Þve counties. R. arenincola is considered a rare species and its distribution has been limited to sand dunes near Lake Michigan. However, in this study, two of the three R. arenincola samples were collected outside of its type location. R. tibialiswas found in three counties, whereasR. hageniwas only found in Evansville, IN. To complement themorphological identiÞcations, a 389-bp region of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) 16S rRNA gene was ampliÞed and sequenced from all Þve Reticulitermes species. Based on species-speciÞc polymorphisms exhibited in mtDNA sequences, a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphismÐbased diagnostic tool was developed to identify samples lacking of diagnostic morphological characters.

Symbiosis in subterranean termites: a review of insights from molecular studies.
The symbiotic relationship of termites and their eukaryotic and prokaryotic gut microbiota is a focal point of research because of the important roles symbionts play in termite nutrition. The use of molecular methods has recently provided valuable insights into the species diversity and the roles of microorganisms in the guts of termites. This paper provides a review of the current knowledge of...

A laboratory study was conducted to determine the toxicity of indoxacarb and chlorantraniliprole to Eastern subterranean termites, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) resulting from topical applications and exposure to treated soil. Soils with varying organic matter (0.57-3.64%) and chemical characteristics were used in termiticide bioassays. Lethal dose resulting from ...
متن کاملCharring does not affect wood infestation by subterranean termites
Fire is an important part of forest ecosystems, as is the insect fauna. Changes in wood brought about by fire may alter the ability of termites to use the wood, interrupting the decay cycle of woody debris. The ability of termites to find, infest, and feed upon wood after it had been charred was evaluated in the laboratory and field. Eastern subterranean termites, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kolla...

The termite fauna of a plantation of Eucaliptus urophylla S.T. Blake (Myrtales: Mytaceae) in Buritis, Minas Gerais, was manually sampled in 12 transects. The assemblage contained 28 species belonging to Termitidae and Rhinotermitidae. This assemblage corresponds to a subset of the native fauna of the cerrado previously present in this region. Compared to the original native fauna, it has a lowe...

The Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermesformosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), accidentally brought into the United States, has become a major urban pest, causing damage to structures and live trees. Because of increasing restrictions on the use of conventional termiticides, attention is focused on finding safer alternative methods for termite management. Oil from citrus peel, re...
